Evolutionary Developmental Biology Of The Cerebral Cortex (novartis Foundation Symposia)

E-Book Overview

This short book (271, not 500+ pages as stated by Amazon)consists of brief review articles by leading researchers, followed by an edited Q&A/discussion section that followed the presentations at a symposium held in 4/99. Don't bother even trying to read this unless you've got a pretty good background in developmental biology, neuroanatomy, and molecular biology, as much of the book discusses how, for example, various morphogen genes like Emx1, WNT, FGF8 etc are involved in patterning brain structure. But if this stuff turns you on, there's a wealth of information here, and the discussion sections show where the field will be headed.

Known until September 1997 as the Ciba Foundation, it was established in 1947 by the CIBA company of Basle, which merged with Sandoz in 1996, to form Novartis. The Foundation operates independently in London under English trust law. It was formally opened on 22 June 1949. The Foundation promotes the study and general knowledge of science and in particular encourages international co-operation in scienti¢c research. To this end, it organizes internationally acclaimed meetings (typically eight symposia and allied open meetings and 15^20 discussion meetings) and publishes eight books per year featuring the presented papers and discussions from the symposia. Although primarily an operational rather than a grant-making foundation, it
