PREFACE The printed Guide and multiplatform CD-ROM provide a virtual histology laboratory experience for the user. The CD-ROM database contains over 2000 page files. Most of the CD-ROM images are grouped in nested series of images that progress from lowpower views useful for orientation to higher-power views, following the standard approach to studying histology microscope slides in the laboratory. Over 75 ultrastructural images are included on the CD-ROM reflecting the increasing importance of electron microscopy in understanding cell structure and function. The CD-ROM and the Guide are designed to be used together, but they can also be used separately. The CD-ROM might be used alone for self-study, for reference, or to review for licensing board examinations. The Guide offers a highly organized approach to the laboratory study of microscopic anatomy, and provides concise text emphasizing key concepts. The Guide and CD-ROM together are designed to supplement a comprehensive histology textbook or course.
PEDAGOGIC DESIGN
This two-part set is uniquely designed as a learning system. The printed Guide not only provides a structured laboratory experience but also promotes a means to learn microscopic anatomy in a manner that makes it understandable and intuitive. In recognition of the importance of context for successful recall of the vocabulary and images of histology, the Guide emphasizes three contexts: • the context of a morphological continuum from gross anatomy to the light m
