his project has been carried out under the joint sponsorship of the American Psychoanalytic Association and Yale University Press. We are grateful to both for giving us this opportunity and for providing us with the support we have needed to accomplish the task. Th is book is the direct descendent of previous editions of Psychoanalytic Terms and Concepts edited by Drs. Burness Moore and Bernard Fine. Their earlier vision is the basis for this volume. Their 1990 edition provided an essential reference for us in formulating our own vision of the task. This book represents the concerted efforts of a small army of people who devoted endless hours to its construction. At times, it seemed as though logomachy over the best terms to describe inenarrable states of mind would never end. We certainly learned many new words!
