FOREWORD volume presents the Proceedings of the International Seminar on Doping, held in May 1964 at the Universities of Ghent and Brussels on the initiative of the Research Committee of the International Council of Sport and Physical Education, UNESCO, and organized by a local committee under the chairmanship of Professor emer. C. Heymans, Nobel Prize Laureate. The Seminar was intended as a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the doping problem in the field of sport and physical education. About fifty participants from ten countries were present at this small meeting, which offered the advantage of permitting closer scientific and social contacts and of facilitating more free discussion than usually occurs in larger meetings. The multidisciplinary approach of the doping problem is well reflected in the papers presented, which were dealing with the pharmacological, biochemical, psychological, ethical, social and juridical aspects of doping. Although the time for a complete and internationally accepted solution of the complex problems related to doping in the field of sport may still seem to be far away, real progress proved to be achieved at the outcome of the seminar, in the sense that it revealed the extent of the shortcomings in our knowledge and legislations with regard to the use of doping agents. We are grateful for the opportunity of paying a very sincere and sorrowing tribute to the memory of our late colleague and friend, Dr. E. Merlevede, Professor of Medical Toxicology at the University of Ghent, who, before his sudden death in September 1963, had agreed, with characteristic enthusiasm, to organize this seminar. We also express our gratitude to His Excellency Mr. J. Custers, Minister of Public Health, for his very much appreciated financial aid. As organizers and editors our sincerest thanks go out to all the colleagues who so kindly co-operated in the presentation of papers and in the rapid publication of the present Proceedings, and to all who, by participating to the discussions and by attending the sessions, contributed to the success of this Seminar. Co-operation with Pergamon Press was perfect in every respect and it is a pleasure to acknowledge gratefully the generous assistance they have given us. It is our hope that these Proceedings will make the readers aware of the essential lines along which present-day research on doping in the field of THIS
