The symposium was sponsored by the Arabic Linguistics Society, and the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages, the Middle East Studies Arabic program, and the College of Humanities of Brigham Young University. Dilworth Parkinson was the local organizer of the symposium. A total of twenty-one papers were presented at the symposium; of these ten are published in this volume. The papers presented at the symposium were selected on the basis of an anonymous review of abstracts submitted to the Program Committee. The papers included
