Professor Shockney is a registered nurse with a BS in Health Care Administration and a Masters in Administrative Science from Johns Hopkins University. She has worked at Johns Hopkins since 1983 and has served as the Administrative Director since 1997. She has written seven books and more than 90 articles on breast cancer and is a nationally recognized public speaker. She was appointed to a chair by Hopkins Board of Trustees in 2008 as the University Distinguished Service Assistant Professor of Breast Cancer. She is an Assistant Professor in the departments of surgery and gynecology at Hopkins. She serves on the medical advisory board of several national breast cancer organizations and is the co-founder and vice president of a national non-profit organization called Mothers Supporting Daughters with Breast Cancer. Professor Shockney is the recipient of numerous national awards; these include the Distinguished Graduate for Lifetime Achievement in 1997, the National Circle of Life and the American Cancer Society’s Voice of Hope in 1998; she was selected as an Unsung Hero for breast cancer in 2001. She also received the 2001 Lane A. Adams Award for Excellence in Caring from the American Cancer Society, the Oncology Nursing Society Award for Excellence in Breast Cancer Education in 2002, the Impact Award from the National Consortium of Breast Centers in 2003, and the Maryland Komen Award in 2003. In 2004 she was selected as one of the Top 100 Women in Maryland. Professor Shockney was selected by the Komen Foundation, nationally, to receive the 2005 Professor of Survivorship Award. In 2006 she received the Patient of Courage Award from the American Plastic Surgery Society, and in 2007, Yoplait’s Breast Cancer Champion award. Her research focus is in the area of quality of life. Dr. Shapiro is Chairman of the Department of Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Medical Director of the Johns Hopkins Program in Geriatric Oncology. He also serves as a faculty member of the Breast Cancer Program for the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Dr. Shapiro received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and his medical degree from George Washington University. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a hematology fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago. He completed a medical oncology fellowship with B. J. Kennedy at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Shapiro completed additional postgraduate work in medical ethics at the University of Chicago and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
