Some artists, such as William Shakespeare or Ben Jonson, are well known. Some, such as Mary Astell, have only recently been recognized. Still others, such as Thomas Wilson, remain obscure except to experts but are thought important by the editors. Hierarchies, namely, which authors are thought to be the most valued or influential, are always in flux, and thus, perhaps, some day printers, for example, may be seen as central to the age. Much of the writing discussed herein is readily available. However, many works are out of print and available only in library collections and on the Internet. These works still deserve to endure—if for no other reason than because of their historical importance—and thus one of the volume’s functions is preservation. Another is the active promotion of these authors, certain brilliant men and women, whose words continue to entertain and enlighten. Encyclopedia of British Writers, 16th and 17th Centuries, of course, cannot replace reading and enjoying the works of the writers and artists whose entries follow, but it will help general readers a
