TEACHER CERTIFICATION STUDY GUIDE California State Credential in Physical Education (Single Subject Credential) A Single Subject Teaching Credential authorizes the holder to teach Physical Education in departmentalized classes (usually grades 7-12), but he/she may also teach any subject in this field at any grade level (i.e. Preschool, K-12, adult classes). Requirements: 1.
Complete a Baccalaureate or higher degree, except in professional education, from a regionally-accredited college or university.
2.
Pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).
3.
Verify subject matter competence by either: A. Achieving a passing score on all three subtests of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET). OR B. Completing a commission-approved subject-matter program and obtaining verification of completion from the authorized person in the department of the program.
4. Complete a single subject teacher preparation program including successful student teaching, and obtain a formal recommendation for the credential by the California college or university where the program was completed. About the CSET Examination in Physical Education The Physical Education CSET is a test lasting five hours. All Single Subject subtests are administered during the afternoon session (1:30pm-7:00pm) on the test administration day except for CSET: Physical Education Subtest I, which is administered during the morning (7:30am-1:00pm) and/or afternoon sessions.
