FACIAL EXPRESSION. See Nonverbal Communication. FACTOR ANALYSIS 1-efers to a broad family of multivariate linear model:; designed to examine the interrelations among a set of continuously distributed manifest variables as a function of a smaller set of unobserved latent fac~ors. This technique is often used to examine the common influences believed to give rise to a set of observed measures (measurement structure) or to reduce a larger set of measures to a smaller set of linear composites for use in subsequent analysis (data reduction). Spearman first introduced factor analysis as a method for mderstanding the common influences thought to underlie multiple measures of intelligence ( I 904). and Thurstone extended Spearman's model with the development of the common factor model (1935). Factor analysis is based on the premise that the measured variables are a linear additive function of the unobserved latent factors, and that these factors give rise to the pattern oi observed correlations among the measures. The fundamental equation for the factor model is: Y, = h,151 -!r h,LS* + . . . +h,m5m+ E, where y, represents ) b ejtllof p continuously distributed variables measured on a sample of n independent subjects. A,,,,represents the factor loading (or partial regression coefficient) relating variable j to the inthfactor
