With the present edition of Gevmaw for Keuding Knowledge the author has consolidated a shift in content, begun in the fourth edition, emphasizing the need of students in the humanities, arts, and social sciences to attain a basic knowledge of German that can be used independently to begin to read specialized literature in their respective fields. In addition, an effort has been made in the fifth edition to concentrate more on materials specific to German-speaking cultures. Grammar explanations continue to focus on non-speaker perceptions and approaches to negotiation of meaning that attend to pitfalls that often trouble beginners translating and reading German.
