Teaching Physical Education in the Primary School In order to teach physical education, teachers need additional skills, knowledge and understanding to those required by other subjects in the primary curriculum. Teaching Physical Education in the Primary School provides professional development for teachers, and it aims to increase knowledge and understanding, confidence and enthusiasm in an area of the curriculum that often receives a very short time allocation during initial teacher training courses. The areas covered by Teaching Physical Education in the Primary School include: ■ subject knowledge of different activity areas: games, gymnastics, dance, swimming, outdoor activities, athletic activities and health-related fitness and exercise; ■ safety and organization of children and equipment; ■ appropriate teaching points to improve children’s skills; ■ teachers’ self-evaluation; ■ adaptation strategies for children with special needs. Teaching Physical Education in the Primary School will be useful for primary teachers, subject leaders responsible for professional development and trainee teachers. It focuses on giving practical advice to develop teachers’ skills to ensure that children are taught effectively and safely in physical education. Bev Hopper, Jenny Grey and Trish Maude have extensive experience of teaching physical education in primary schools. They teach on undergraduate and postgraduate initial teacher training courses in physical education and offer a wide range of courses for the continuing professional development of practising primary teachers. They currently lecture in Primary Curriculum and Professional Studies at Homerton College, Cambridge.
