Foreword Healing of the mind, as well as healing of the body, probably was practiced in prehistoric times. In fact, it is quite probable that the earliest healing, except for cuts, bruises, broken bones and such, was to mend the soul or spirit of the afflicted one. When one's head split with pain or one's belly burned from an inner fire, what else could be amiss? In more recent times, shamans, witch doctors and, most recently, even psychotherapists, with the backing of the science of psychology, have offered their services in the treatment of bodily ills. With the advent of science, shamans became psychologists and witch doctors became
