About the Subject Assessments CSET™: Subject Assessment in the General Science Examination Purpose: The assessments are designed to test the knowledge and competencies of prospective secondary level teachers. The question bank from which the assessment is drawn is undergoing constant revision. As a result, your test may include questions that will not count toward your score. Test Version: There are two versions of subject assessment for General Science tests in California. General Science Subtest I (118) emphasizes comprehension in Astronomy, Dynamic Processes of Earth, Earth Resources, Waves, Forces and Motion, Electricity and Magnetism; General Science Subtest II (119) emphasizes comprehension in Ecology, Genetics and Evolution, Molecular Biology and Chemistry, Cell and Organismal Biology, Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics, Structures and Properties of Matter. Both exams are taken together in addition to one subtest either in Biology/Life Science, Chemistry, Physics or Earth and Planetary Science to receive the credential to teach general and integrated science in chosen subject areas. The General Science examination guide is based on a typical knowledge level of persons who have completed a bachelor’s degree program in General Science. Time Allowance and Format: You will have five hours to finish the test.
