Bender 2013 To C and all my friends who are supporting me Cover illustration: “Plaster model for the marble ‘The Tinted Venus’ “ by John GIBSON Photo 19.8.2009 by Yair Haklai, adjusted 7.1.2014 by JDS http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Gibson-Venus-Royal_Academy_of_Arts.jpg John GIBSON (1790-1866) was a Welsh Neoclassical sculptor who spent most of his career in Italy. He is present in this catalogue with 21 works, of which 5 are coloured sculptures entitled ‘The Tinted Venus’. GIBSON created in 1833 a similar sculpture in white marble, entitled ‘Venus Verticordia’. The polychromes he created from the mid 1850's onwards faced fierce criticism, though it is well known that the ancient Greek sculptures were all painted. The illustration shows the plaster version (172,7x50,8x46 cm) bequeathed by John GIBSON in 1866 to the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Venus holds an apple in her left hand and a tortoise is seen next to her left foot: the apple and tortoise are attributes of Venus and therefore the work got an entry in Topic 3 Attributes of this catalogue (record number R24545, catalogue number 289).
