E-Book Content

Dacia Dacia examines the way the Roman conquest and organisation of the central core of the province of Dacia impacted on the native settlement pattern and society. It analyses Roman-native interaction from a landscape perspective focusing on the core territory of both Iron Age and Roman Dacia. This includes the royal Dacian heartland (the Orastie Mountains) and its surrounding lowlands, which later belonged to the hinterlands of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa and Apulum, the two most important Roman towns in the province of Dacia. Oltean considers the nature and distribution of settlements of various types and functions in the pre-Roman and Roman periods, the human impact on the local landscape and the changes which occurred as a result of Roman occupation. The study also provides a methodological framework for further analysis of the landscape and of the evolution of the settlement pattern, which can be extended throughout the province of Dacia and into neighbouring areas. The result is a detailed consideration of previous theories of native settlement patterns and the impact of Roman colonisation. Dacia offers fresh insight into the province of Dacia and the nature of Romanisation and Roman-native interaction. Ioana A. Oltean is a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow.
