Adrienne L. Kaeppler is Curator of Oceanic Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, and was previously a research anthropologist at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. A recipient of the Silver Jubilee Anniversary Medal given by the King of Tonga for contributions to
Tongan culture, she has written, edited, and co-edited over two hundred articles and books. Her research focuses on the cultures of the Pacific and on the interrelationships between social structure and the arts, especially dance, music, and the visual arts,
