FOREWORD
The chemistry of phosphorus in its fundamental and applied aspects has grown rapidly in the past decade. Progress has been made in nearly every scientific discipline dealing with this key element. The understanding of reaction mechanisms of organophosphorus compounds and the development of analytical tools for their studies promoted research in nucleic acid chemistry, investigations on metabolism and biosynthesis of biologically relevant phosphorus compounds and elucidation of the mode of action of enzymes responsible for their biological transformations. Although the achievements in the fields of phosphorus chemistry connected with Life Sciences are significant, still phosphorus chemistry hesi tates to open broadly towards biochemistry. International Symposia on Phosphorus Chemistry {Paris 1969, Gdansk 1974, Halle 1979) to a very low extent covered topics dealing with biological aspects of phosphorus chemistry. Remembering, that promotion of knowledge comes through interdisciplinary approaches we undertook an effort to organize an International Symposium on Phosphor
