Foreword
This v o l u m e presents a selection of invited papers w h i c h demonstrate the close interactions b e t w e e n the various branches o f the solid state sciences. Several papers review the recent success in materials preparation and in the remarkable structural and compositional control, especially for semiconductors and laser materials, but also for solid electrolytes. T h e o r y and experiment have greatly advanced the understanding o f p o i n t defects and t h e i r utilization for doping. Surfaces and interfaces are no l o n g e r just inevitable perturbations, instead they are used for quantization studies and device applications. The interaction with l i g h t remains a n active t o p i c ; solid laser sources as well as n o v e l optical characterization techniques are covered here. The manuscripts were s u b m i t t e d a t the meeting; only twelve weeks l a t e r this book is published, despite d o u b l e proof-reading. My compliments and t h a n k s t o publisher and a u t h o r s alike! This publication o f u p d a t e d reviews with a b u n d a n t reference to latest work - a t the speed o f a l e t t e rj o u r n a l - s h o u l d h o p e f u l l y b e n e f i t the solid state community. From next year on, the fun and excitement of editing this series goes to Joachim Treusch, the elected successor as chairman o f the semic o n d u c t o r division.
