There is a growing appreciation of the role that pharmaceutical excipients play in the production, shelf stability, dispensability, patient dosage acceptability, bioavailability, and delivery of the active pharmaceutical ingredient to the target organ. As the late Dr. Shangraw, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Pharmacy, University of Maryland, pointed out (Pharmaceutical Technology, June 1997), when I was starting out in the field, years ago, virtually all excipients were of natural origin—as either foods, food additives, or simple inorganics. They were supplied primarily by food producers or chemical suppliers. During the 1950s and 1960s development of excipients began to accelerate in the industry. The need for reproducible disintegration, dissolution, and bioavailability began to be recognized. Since available excipients were natural or well-known compounds, without obvious physiological activity, excipients were universally considered inactive and inert.
