Preface The study of soil science is the first step in the arduous task of prevention of erosion and rehabilitation of soil. Scientific studies have resulted in several advances in this area and Benchmarks have been laid down for the benefit of soil conservation authorities, government agencies and lay farmers. The present publication attempts to bring together the basic principles of soil science and the dynamics of erosion in all forms, fo'r the benefit of the student as well as researcher and practising professional associated with conservation of natural resources. The text has been sell supported by prolific tables, diagrams pictures and illustrations. The publication will be of immense use to all those interested in this vital scientific area of earth studies. . The earth we mine, the land that produces food, fibre, and shelter, and yet few of us can even define soil, let alone explain how it works, what it does~ or how it changes. This book contains the soil information, root growth and agricultural management, nitrate leaching management, podzols, paramos soils, water repellant soils, rare earth elements, and {:. ·much more. It also presents hundreds of entries on tillage, irrigation, erosion control, minerals, ground water, and soil degradation. Further, the book outlines the agricultural, environmental, industrial, and cultural components that affect soil productivity and offers qUick access to peer:..•.. reviewed articles on all branches of soil science - from mineralogy and physics to soil management, restoration and global warming and assesses ..::. the physical and hydrological properties of soil in natural and agricultural : . •t., .}cosystems.
