JUNG TH€ UNDISCOV€R€D S€LF ; A BRILLIANT AND SEARCHING INQUIRY INTO THE DILEMMA OF THE INDIVIDUAL IN TODAY'S SOCIETY BY ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST PSYCHIATRISTS. J # "It is, unfortunately, only too clear that if the individual is not truly regenerated in spirit, society cannot be either, for society is the sum total of individuals in need of redemption!' -C. G. JUNG WORLD IN CRISIS In this challenging and timely book, a renowned modern psychiatrist pleads that we abandon the concept of the organization man which leads to the tyranny that blankets much of the world today. Emphatically and convincingly he affirms that this can only be done by exploring and bringing to light the true nature of the individual human being — "the undiscovered self" ... the real man as opposed to the statistical man. Dr. Jung offers no easy solutions to the terrible crisis in world affairs. Instead he declares that the alternative to world annihilation depends, not upon mass movements for good, nor on idealistic pleos for the prevalence of reason, but rather upon a recognition of the existence of good and evil in 0V0ry individual and o true understanding of the inner self. "A passionate plea for individual integrity." — NewYork Times Book Review ISBN 0-451-132374-13 Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2017 with funding from Kahle/Austin Foundation https://archive.org/details/undiscoveredselfOOcarl PRESCRIPTION FOR SALVATION Distilling the experience of a lifetime in this urgent and penetrating book, Dr. Jung affirmed that the survival of our civilization might well depend upon closing the widening gulf between the conscious and unconscious aspects of the human psyche. At once a serious warning and a long-range prescription, this provocative book makes clear that in an age when man is no longer threatened by natural catastrophes and the danger of worldwide epidemics, he is very greatly endangered by psychic changes in man. Only when the individual understands the duality of his nature —his capacity for evil as well as for good—can he begin to understand and cope with the potential threat of those in power. CARL GUSTAV JUNG was, together with Freud and Adler, one of the three great pioneers in modem psychiatry. He was bom in 1865 in Switzerland, where he studied medicine and psychiatry and later became one of Sigmund Freud’s early supporters and collaborators. Eventually, serious theoretical disagreements (among them Jung’s view of the religious instinct in man) led to a doctrinal and personal break between the two famed psychiatrists. Dr. Jung was the author of many books, and he lived and practiced for many years in his native Zurich. THIS IS A REPRINT OF THE HARDCOVER EDITION ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED BY LITTLE, BROWN & COMPANY.
